Dortmund Student Services are service providers to more than 55,000 students at the university locations of Dortmund, Hagen, Meschede, Iserlohn and Soest.


Student Housing

Dortmund Student Services provide student housing for over 2,800 students in 16 residences in Dortmund (12), Iserlohn (2), Hagen (1) and Soest (1).

Applicants must be students at one of the following universities: Technical University of Dortmund, University of Applied Sciences in Dortmund or South Westphalia University of Applied Sciences. Students of the Business and Information Technology School (BiTS) in Iserlohn or the International School of Management (ISM) in Dortmund may also take advantage of this housing offer for a slightly higher rental rate.

Students have a choice between the classic single room with bathroom and kitchenette, (double) apartments or apartments/suites shared with several students. Most of the rooms are partially or fully furnished. An integral part of every offer includes use of communal rooms, free parking for cars and bicycles, Internet access and cable TV.

Food and Drink

Every day approximately 15,000 guests come to the student dining halls, bistros and cafeterias run by Dortmund Student Services. The 17 dining facilities are distributed over the locations Dortmund, Hagen, Iserlohn, Meschede and Soest. Diners can choose classic dining hall meals in combination with items from the pasta, salad, vegetable and dessert buffets, but they also have the choice of burgers and other snacks prepared to taste, quality pizza and pasta variations as well as à la carte side dishes in the unique restaurant “Calla”. An event management service takes care of catering and event logistics for parties and receptions in the order of 10 – 1,000 guests.

Student Financing

Dortmund Student Services is commissioned to administer the most important type of student financial aid — “BAföG” (German government grants and loans). More than 10,000 applications from the following seven universities are processed annually: Technical University of Dortmund, Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts, South Westphalia University of Applied Sciences, Hagen Distance Learning University, Dortmund International School of Management, Business and Information Technology School Iserlohn und SRH University of Applied Sciences in Hamm.
Furthermore, Student Services can help arrange special loans to finance the final stages of studying (Studienabschlussdarlehen der Darlehenskasse) or advise students about other financial aid options.

Students with Children

In close proximity to the Dortmund south campus is the daycare center “4 Jahreszeiten” maintained by Dortmund Student Services. The center cares for 60 children between 4 months and 6 years/school entrance in mixed age groups.
Students with children profit additionally from free meals for children, which can be procured by showing a special ID in the Student Services dining hall.

Social issues
Money management counseling
Get out of debt: Together with the Diakonischen Werk Dortmund (protestant church-sponsored social welfare service) Dortmund Student Services offer money management counseling to help students get/keep out of debt. Students can take advantage of counseling even on short notice, i.e. without waiting a long time for an appointment.
Emergency aid

Students who find themselves in unexpected financial difficulties can receive help through emergency aid. Some specific examples of emergency financial aid are:

* free dining at the university dining hall

* provision for rental arrears, utilities and rental overheads

* payment of health insurance premium arrears

* financial support for the registration fee

* settlement of open medical costs

* funding of baby layette, small child clothing or other first-time needs (cribs, buggies, etc.)

On Dortmund Campus Nord (northern campus) there is an “infopoint” in the central dining hall building which can help with the following services:

* Money and your university studies

– issuance of BAföG application forms

– help in filling out the BAföG application forms; the first check for correct completion

– advice regarding special funding through the Student Services loan association (DaKa: Darlehenskasse der Studentenwerke)

– advice regarding emergency financial aid
* Paying with the ID debit card at the university dining hall, etc.:
– adding value to the university ID debit card using cash

– recovering credit from the debit card

– issuance of transferable „White Cards“, including credit

* Student housing: Counseling and first information

* Arrangements for people to accompany persons with disabilities to the dining hall
* Lost and found office (among other things for lost university IDs)
* Issuance of special coins needed for washing clothes
* Sale of postage stamps
* First instance for the processing of accident reports
* Help for questions about orientation on the campus
